About the Programme

The NHS emits approximately 1 million tonnes of carbon each year and consumes about 1% of the energy consumed by the whole of England. With the Department of Health’s mandatory target for the NHS to reduce its carbon emissions by 0.15 million tonnes carbon emissions by 2010, and regulation from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and Energy Performance in Buildings Directive, reducing carbon emissions and capturing cost savings has become an increasingly important issue for the NHS.

Salix has developed a programme tailored to the needs of NHS Foundation Trust Hospitals. The primary focus of the work is to reduce carbon emissions under the control of the Foundation Trusts such as heating, cooling and lighting. Unfortunately, at present we cannot work with non Foundation Trust Hospitals.

The Salix pilot began with four NHS Foundation Trusts in April 2007, with total Salix funding of £690,000. Salix are pleased to confirm the success of this pilot and the consequent launch of Phase 1 of the full programme. Please click here for an application request.

Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust provides an excellent example of the energy and cost savings a hospital can gain from the Salix programme. For the full case study please click here.
