*** Latest Update: The Salix Energy Efficiency Fund (SEEF) application window is currently closed. Due to the recent announcement of the general election, and the requirements of purdah, we are unable to release details on when the new SEEF funding application window for 2019/20 will open. We will announce further details as soon as we are able to. ***
Salix, in partnership with the Department for Education (DfE), works to reduce energy usage in individual academies, sixth form colleges, free schools and Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) across England. Through the installation of energy-efficient technologies, applicants can lower energy bills and create a more comfortable learning environment.
DfE funding via SEEF can be accessed for over 100 different technologies. These include LED lighting, boilers and insulation. Installing new technologies can save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.
Funding is available for:
- Academy Schools
- Multi-Academy Trusts
- Free Schools
- Academy Sixth Form Colleges
Financing is in rounds with applications open once a year. Academies can access funding through two streams:
- The Salix Energy Efficiency Fund (SEEF)
- The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF).
Funding Streams for Academy Schools, Sixth-Form Colleges, Free Schools and MATs
The DfE provide interest-free loan funding through the SEEF programme for energy efficiency projects. This is to help modernise buildings and save money. SEEF provides financing for applicants with projects which are solely focused on energy efficiency. Applications open once a year and are made directly to Salix. The interest-free financing is paid and repaid to the DfE.

The DfE provide funding through the CIF programme for any building condition improvement works. Where there is no energy efficiency savings, this funding is provided in the form of a grant. If there is an energy efficiency aspect to the project, an interest-free loan from the DfE can be applied for as part of a CIF bid. This improves the value-for-money score (an assessment criterion of CIF funding). CIF opens for applications once a year - typically between October and December. Please note CIF is not open to large Multi-Academy Trusts.

How to choose which funding stream to apply for
Each applicant is entitled to apply for one SEEF bid alongside up to two CIF bids. It is important that these bids are not for the same project.
