The University of St Andrews saves 5,300 tonnes of carbon with a Salix Recycling Fund

Since 2007, The University of St Andrews has been reducing carbon emissions and saving energy across its estates, with the support of a Salix ring-fenced recycling fund.

University of St Andrews has the ambitious aim to become the UK’s first carbon neutral university for energy in buildings. As part of their Carbon Management Plan the Salix recycling fund has, over the past 9 years, funded over 150 completed energy efficiency projects. This has saved the university over 5,300 tonnes* of carbon and more than £960,000 annually in energy bills. This is the biggest saving of any Recycling Fund in Scotland and second across the United Kingdom. David Stutchfield, Sustainability Manager at the university, said. “The Salix fund has been transformational. It is such an effective system as the fund available is constantly revolving. Any financial savings achieved are put back into the fund to be used for further energy-saving projects.”

Salix provides funding for over 120 energy efficient technologies, as well as technical support. The University of St Andrews has used the Recycling Fund to finance over 50 insulation projects, over a dozen lighting upgrades, 27 boiler improvements and ten Building Management Systems projects.

Currently the University of St Andrews is using their Recycling Fund to install LED lighting across several buildings and an air curtain project. The fund has brought several benefits outside of financial and carbon savings. Lighting, heating and management projects help provide optimal conditions and these technologies will have a greater lifetime than their previous installs. A sustainable funding business model is also an increasingly attractive aspect to prospective students and staff.
