Project Development Resources for the University Carbon Reduction Fund

This is a dedicated area setting out a number of energy efficiency project examples from UK higher education institutes. It is provided to help support the develop of new project ideas for this programme. 

Salix has funded over 4,250 projects in the HEI sector in Scotland and across the rest of the UK, valued at over £147 million. These projects range in size and scale, from a small £5,000 motor controls project, up to £7.3m toward a combined heat and power project with the University of Liverpool.

To help with project development a selection of case studies and project knowledge slides (PKS) can be found below. These are examples of energy efficiency projects which have been completed by Salix clients within the higher education sector, demonstrating the carbon and financial savings these institutions have been able to achieve. 

A range of technology types and building applications have been chosen as examples of the breadth of energy efficiency projects which can be included within a project proposal.

Case studies 

Below is a selection of case studies on Salix clients within the university and public sector across Scotland and the rest of the UK. For more examples please follow the link to our Knowledge Share area.

The University of St Andrews implemented over 120 individual projects including; boiler replacements, motor controls, CHP plant, insulation and lighting, ICT upgrades.

Total loan value: £2,475,061, Annual £ savings: £615,164, Annual tCOsavings: 3,479, Project payback: 4 years.

The University of Strathclyde implemented over 24 individual projects including; pipework insulation, boiler upgrades, heat recovery and LED installation.

Dundee City Council upgraded their street lights to LED

Total loan value: £223,644, Annual £ savings: £29,473, Annual tCO2 savings: 129, Average Project payback: 7.6 years.

East Ayrshire Council upgraded their street lights to LED

Total loan value: £231,645, Annual £ savings: £38,505, Annual tCO2 savings: 138, Average Project payback: 6 years.

Aberystwyth University implemented a voltage management system, BMS and controls, window sealing and a new boiler installation.

The University of Bradford implemented a 1.6Mwe CHP engine.

Glyndwr University implemented Phenolic foam insulation, valve and flanges insulation.

The University of Liverpool retrofitted a Grade II listed building with two 2MW CHP units.

The University of Manchester upgraded lighting in the Grade I listed John Rylands Library – Deansgate to LED.

Other institution case studies of relevance

Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust implemented a 212 kW CHP and installed LED lighting.

Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust implemented over 20 individual projects including; boiler retrofit economisers, Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), insulation, motor controls, swimming pool covers and LED lighting with lighting controls.

Non Domestic Energy Efficiency Framework

Salix can also assist with other forms of delivery such as energy performance contracting and the use of the Non Domestic Energy Efficiency (NDEE) Framework. This framework has been designed to support Public and Third Sector organisations procure estate wide Energy Efficiency retrofit work. In March 2017 East Renfrewshire completed energy efficiency projects across 8 schools using the NDEE framework for more information see the project knowlegde slide below.

East Renfrewshire Council implemented LED lighting, air source heat pumps and BEMS across 8 schools.
