Press Release: New multi-million-pound programme launched to help Scottish universities reduce their carbon footprint

The Scottish Funding Council (SFC), supported by Salix Finance, is launching a £19m programme aimed at boosting investment in energy efficiency across Scotland’s higher education institutions. The programme will provide accessible support and finance for carbon reduction throughout the sector and build capacity for funding in additional years, to benefit both students and staff.

To date, Salix Finance has supported the Scottish public sector to invest over £63 million in energy efficiency projects which are forecasted to have saved the public sector more than £10 million a year. These projects are contributing towards the Scottish Governments carbon reduction targets as well as improving and modernising facilities for the public.

Nottinghamshire County Council has implemented energy efficiency projects across 78 schools, which are estimated to save over £460,000 and 2,700* tonnes of CO2e per year. The schools expect to save a significant £5.9m on their energy bills over the lifetime of the technologies.

Gateshead Council deliver over £2.3m in energy efficiency projects

Gateshead Council has been working closely with Salix since 2009 using their original £650,000 recycling fund to finance over £2.3m in energy efficiency projects.

Using Salix funding, the council have been able to deliver 52 energy efficiency projects including pipework insulation, LED lighting, and Building Energy Management System (BEMS) installations.

These projects have helped Gateshead achieve and exceed their targeted 35% reduction in carbon emissions between 2009 and 2016, saving an estimated £542,000 and 2,594 tonnes* of CO2e a year.

Kent County Council set to save 67% on annual electricity bill thanks to greener street lighting upgrade

Kent County Council is on track to significantly reduce its carbon footprint after investing in a major street lighting replacement project.

The council is set to save millions each year on its energy bills, following the ambitious lighting upgrade programme. The county will see all street lighting units replaced with more modern alternatives, in addition to the installation of a Central Management System (CMS).

In total, over 120,000 outdated lanterns will be replaced with highly efficient LED luminaires and will significantly lower the council’s energy consumption.

Newcastle University continue long-standing commitment to carbon reduction by delivering estate-wide LED upgrade

Salix is proud to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of supporting Newcastle University with the delivery of energy efficiency projects. In 2008, the University was involved in establishing a Salix/HEFCE Revolving Green Fund 1 and set up a ring-fenced fund of £625,000. Over the past 10 years the University have recycled their original fund almost three times and invested over £2.6 million in energy efficiency projects.

University saves hundreds of thousands through energy efficient upgrades

A post-graduate university in Bedfordshire is set to save hundreds of thousands of pounds and significantly reduce its carbon footprint after investing in energy efficient technologies, including its very own solar farm.

Cranfield University is now on track to save £329,108 annually, decrease its greenhouse gas emissions and reduce its reliance on the national grid.

University of Birmingham to save millions thanks to energy efficiency upgrades

The University of Birmingham is on track to save hundreds of thousands of pounds a year and significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions after investing in a range of energy efficient technologies.

Over the last ten years, the university has implemented more than £4m worth of energy reduction projects, including lighting upgrades and cooling system replacements, in a bid to lower its energy use and environmental impact.
