Salix wins award for carbon reduction project of the year

Salix has won a major sustainability "carbon reduction project of the year" award yesterday [28 October 2021] thanks to its decarbonisation and energy efficiency project with the University of Reading, spanning a range of carbon-reducing initiatives across its campuses, with a total cost of £3.3 million.

For the third year running, the 2021 Big Sustainability Awards celebrated what is being achieved in corporate sustainability, environmental management, and social value, at St. Mary’s Stadium, the home of premiership football club Southampton.

The aim of the work with the University of Reading, centred around upgrading the University with low carbon heating, which involved a major redesigning of its heating systems in key buildings across campuses to alter how heating is zoned. The grant awarded for funding this project is one of the first approved applications from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. This scheme is funded by government and is a key part of the governments programme towards net zero.

This project has enabled Reading University to reduce its carbon emissions by an estimated 816 tonnes per year.
