The accreditation highlights our commitment to climate action and a low-carbon future

We’re proud to announce that we’ve received bronze-level accreditation for our Carbon Literacy.

Awarded on behalf of the Carbon Literacy Project, the endorsement recognises our dedication to tackling climate change, reducing our organisational carbon emissions and a low-carbon future.

The certification is given to organisations who meet several criteria, including the implementation of an organisation-specific training course, and an executive leader who has completed their individual certification.

As well as a specific training programme, course participants are required to complete a pledge, which focuses on new individual and group actions they plan to take to reduce their carbon footprint and to challenge others in their network to do the same. A ‘Carbon Literate’ certification is only awarded after this stage.

Our chief executive Emma Clancy said: “As an organisation who’s core purpose is to enable and inspire organisations to achieve net zero and create better places to live and work, we feel an understanding of the climate crisis and how carbon emissions are impacting our planet is something our people need to know.

“This award recognises the commitment that not just our organisation, but each individual that works here is to making to create a low-carbon future together.”

What is carbon literacy?

Carbon Literacy is defined as: an awareness of carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis.

Carbon Literate Organisation accreditations are awarded through a tiered system, with bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels. Each requires increased levels of commitment to action on climate change.

Emma added: “Our ambition is to continue to climb through the tiers over time, ensuring our dedicated staff remain connected, proficient and confident with the outcomes that we, as an organisation, are working to achieve.”

Dave Coleman, co-founder and managing director of The Carbon Literacy Project, said: “Carbon literacy is an essential skill, vital to every workplace, community, and place of study.

“It is the foundational knowledge, and a catalyst to empowering people to act on climate, however, carbon literacy is only the first step.

“By becoming a bronze accredited carbon literate organisation, Salix has demonstrated its commitment to genuine low carbon action, environmental and economic impact, and the building of a low carbon future for us all.”
