New podcast Tomorrow’s Energy launches with expert insight into the future of the UK’s energy systems

Our brand-new podcast series debuts with consumer champion Stephen Knight, chief executive of the Heat Trust, exploring how heat networks could transform the way we heat our homes and communities

Our new podcast dedicated to the people, technologies and innovations driving the UK’s energy transition has launched.

Tomorrow’s Energy is the new sister podcast to The Decarbonisation Dialogue, taking listeners beyond the headlines to explore the energy systems shaping tomorrow’s homes, businesses and communities.

Launching the series is Stephen Knight, chief executive of the Heat Trust, who joins the podcast to discuss one of the biggest challenges facing the UK’s journey to net zero - how we decarbonise the way we heat our homes.

He says: “From a consumer perspective, most people want heating and hot water to be pretty much invisible. 

“We want it to work every time we turn on the hot tap or the heating, and we want it to be as low cost as it can be. Those have got to be the fundamental principles that take us through into how we heat our homes in the future.”

During the episode, Stephen explains why heating is something most people rarely think about until it stops working, and why that needs to change as the UK moves away from natural gas towards lower-carbon alternatives. 

He explores the opportunities presented by heat networks, how they can make better use of waste heat, and why they will play a vital role in creating cleaner, more resilient energy systems.

The discussion also tackles the realities of delivering affordable low-carbon heat. Stephen reflects on lessons learned from existing heat networks, the impact of rising gas prices, the importance of effective regulation, and why long-term investment in energy infrastructure is essential to ensure consumers benefit from the transition.

As the UK continues its journey towards net zero, Stephen believes consumers must remain at the heart of the transition.

He adds: “If we get this right, keeping costs under control, using genuinely low-cost sources of heat and putting consumers first, heat networks can be a really good deal. Critically, if we’re going to decarbonise our cities in the future, it’s going to be almost impossible to do it without heat networks.”
