Celebrating a greener future: Ealing Hospital marks start of major project

Partners, dignitaries and NHS teams came together to launch a £5.9 million energy upgrade, highlighting a shared vision for sustainability, resilience, and collaboration at the heart of London borough

Salix is supporting a £5.9 million energy upgrade at Ealing Hospital, helping bring partners together to cut carbon, reduce costs and strengthen energy resilience at a vital NHS site.

Although the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme project is still in its early stages, a recent visit gave us a valuable opportunity to see plans taking shape and meet the wide range of organisations involved.

Representatives from delivery partners, framework specialists, local council teams as well as NHS staff all came together, highlighting just how important collaboration will be to its success.

By improving efficiency and resilience now, we are helping ensure sites like Ealing Hospital can continue to provide vital services for communities tomorrow as well as today. Collaboration is key to that success, and it’s been inspiring to see so many partners aligned and committed to making a difference here.

Salix programme manager Bea Morrison is working closely with the hospital and will support the team as it progresses its net zero journey over the next year. She emphasised the significance of the work and the collaborative effort.

Bea joined the visit alongside colleague and assistant director Davide Natuzzi.

She added: “We’re delighted to be working with Ealing on this project and it’s fantastic to see progress getting underway. Projects like this show what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared goal.

“There is no time like the present to push forward with this kind of energy work. It’s about more than carbon savings; it’s about making sure essential public buildings are ready for the future.

“By improving efficiency and resilience now, we are helping ensure sites like Ealing Hospital can continue to provide vital services for communities tomorrow as well as today. Collaboration is key to that success, and it’s been inspiring to see so many partners aligned and committed to making a difference here.”

The recent visit also brought together key dignitaries, including local MP Deirdre Costigan, who joined the team to discuss the hospital’s energy vision and the wider benefits for the local community. Their presence underscored the importance of public sector investment in decarbonisation and energy resilience.

The project is funded through Phase 4 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme which is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by our teams at Salix. The project will introduce low-carbon technologies including heat pumps, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and advanced building management systems.

The hospital says these upgrades are expected to reduce the hospital’s carbon emissions by around 900 tonnes each year while saving more than £260,000 in energy costs annually.

The project also forms part of the wider green plan from London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, focused on tackling climate change while enhancing patient and staff environments.

Vital Energi, alongside the Carbon and Energy Fund framework and other partners, are working together and demonstrating how collaboration and innovation across sectors can achieve large-scale infrastructure improvements.

Investment isn’t just about cutting carbon, it’s about creating healthier, more comfortable and energy-efficient buildings that support patient recovery and provide better spaces for staff to work and care

Our director of public sector decarbonisation Ian Rodger said the investment would help the NHS meet its climate commitments.

He added: “Investment isn’t just about cutting carbon, it’s about creating healthier, more comfortable and energy-efficient buildings that support patient recovery and provide better spaces for staff to work and care.”

Managing director of Ealing Hospital, Mark Titcomb, added: “We’re taking this action to make our hospitals and services more sustainable because climate change is a real threat affecting healthcare. By reducing our carbon footprint now, we’re protecting patient care today and preparing for the challenges of tomorrow.”

Account manager at Vital Energi, Jack Tasker said: “Marking the start of construction at Ealing Hospital, this project is a major step forward in the Trust’s journey to net zero.

“By integrating large‑scale heat pumps, solar PV and smart monitoring, we’re strengthening energy resilience, improving patient comfort and creating a more efficient, sustainable environment for staff, patients and visitors.”

Work began in March and is expected to be completed by April 2027.
