Salix joins the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s Low Carbon Energy Investment round table

Scotland is one of the world leaders when it comes to facing the challenge of climate change and actioning low carbon and renewable energy initiatives. In 2017 over two thirds of Scotland’s electricity was generated by renewables. The country has ambitious plans to create a 100% renewable grid and generate 50% of their heat, transport and electricity from renewables by 2030*. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) recognise the scale of the environmental challenges surrounding sustainability ahead and the need for action.  

On 7th November 2018, Salix was invited by SEPA to join their round table event on how to drive investment in low carbon and renewable energy solutions in Scotland to bridge the financial gap. The event was run in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) and the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which welcomed representatives from the Scottish public, private and third sectors.

Salix contributed to discussions surrounding the financing of low carbon projects which support local generation and link in with national infrastructure projects.  Jennifer Roberts, Salix Scotland Programme Manager, says, “Scotland has demonstrated great initiative in actioning low carbon initiatives, but there is still more work which can be done to develop energy efficient and renewable networks. Salix attended the round table due to our long-term relationships with the Scottish public sector in financing energy efficiency projects. The transformation of rural and urban communities and Scotland’s energy systems are an ambitious goal which Salix is passionate about working towards, in partnership with the energy community”.  

The outcomes of the round table highlighted the potential for blended finance options as well as an opportunity for closer ties between businesses and local communities to create thriving local energy economies.  These initiatives supported SEPA’s “One Planet Prosperity” strategy, to reduce societies consumption of resources and build a more sustainable future for Scotland.
